From Cecil's Mailbag by the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board

Whose face used to be on the dime?

Dear Straight Dope:

Who was on the face of the dime before Eisenhower? --BJJTshield

SDSTAFF RngrJeff replies:

Uh, BJ ... Eisenhower is on the silver dollar. The guy on the dime is Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Work on this. Getting dimes and dollars mixed up could have big consequences later in life.

Not being certain which coin you were interested in, I spoke to the president of Gemco Coins and Jewelry, Greg Martin, and he gave me a breakdown for both:

From 1916 to 1945 , Mercury Dime
From 1946 to present, Roosevelt Dime

From 1878 to 1921, Morgan Dollar
From 1922 to 1935, Peace Dollar
From 1971 to 1978, Eisenhower Dollar
From 1979 to 1981, Susan B. Anthony Dollar
From 1982 to present, American Silver Eagle Dollar

There was no dollar coin minted between 1936 and 1970. Why? Beats me. Maybe they forgot. I hope this information helps.

Cecil's Mailbag is researched and written by members of the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board, Cecil's online auxiliary. Although the SDSAB does its best, these articles are edited by Ed Zotti, not Cecil, so accuracywise you'd better keep your fingers crossed.
